The Great Star Trek Voyager Rewatch: Worst Case Scenario

When B’Elanna discovers a holonovel about a Maquis insurrection on Voyager, playing it soon becomes the crew’s favourite pastime. But when Tom Paris discovers that the story is unfinished, he teams up with original author Tuvok to conclude the scenario. Unfortunately, before she left the ship, Seska had already beaten them to it – and in short order Tuvok and Paris find themselves trapped on a holographic Voyager where everyone is out to kill them.

Given how much I moan about holodeck episodes, it may come as a surprise to learn that I really like Worst Case Scenario. Admittedly, the rewatch reveals it to be merely good rather than awesome, but I still enjoyed myself. Unlike the holonovels that take us out of the sci-fi setting I so love, this one is a ‘what-if’ set on Voyager; a compelling story written by Tuvok that goes on to take a deadly turn with the holographic return of Seska. It’s entertaining from start to finish, and manages to make the tired old holodeck malfunction scenario seem new and fresh again.

Points of Note

  • Seska seems to have hacked Tuvok’s program in revenge for him betraying the Maquis, even though she too was an enemy agent. I guess she was still annoyed that his true identity as a Starfleet agent got her stuck aboard Voyager.
  • Although I would normally complain about how easily Seska compromised Voyager’s security, I’m going to assume that she used her Obsidian Order skills to do it.
  • As well as Seska, the holonovel features the voice of another deceased ex-Maquis – Michael Jonas. We do not see get to see holographic versions of either Lon Suder or Kurt Bendera on screen, however.
  • When Paris walks in on Torres in the holodeck, he says that he expected her to be shooting pool at Sandrines, even though no one runs the Sandrines holoprogram any more.

Lost, crashed or destroyed shuttlecraft running total: 7

Possibly salvageable shuttlecraft running total: 5

Number of times the entire crew gets kicked off the ship: 2

Number of times Voyager gets destroyed: 1

Summary – Worst Case Scenario: I want to play the non-deadly version of the Insurrection Alpha holonovel.
